Jon Gray, Blackstone president and COO, set to succeed Stephen Schwarzman after his 41-year tenure leading the private equity giant.

Stephen Schwarzman, who has led Blackstone as chief executive for 41 years — one of the longest tenures of any leader of a major American corporation — has said the question of succession at the private equity giant has already been resolved. Jon Gray, the firm’s president and chief operating officer, will succeed him, Schwarzman said.

Gray, who is 56, is 23 years Schwarzman’s junior. He has held the roles of president and chief operating officer since 2018 and is described as Schwarzman’s right-hand man. Schwarzman said the decision was made a decade ago.
