Aisin Claims 98% Power Reduction with Magnetic RAM Chip Developed Alongside Tohoku University

Japanese automotive components maker Aisin has announced the development of a new semiconductor that uses magnetic technology to cut power consumption by approximately 98% compared with comparable existing chips, a step the company said could significantly improve the efficiency of AI data processing.

Aisin said Monday it developed the chip in collaboration with Tohoku University, drawing on the university’s expertise in magnetic random-access memory, known as MRAM. The Nagoya-based supplier, which counts Toyota among its customers, said the technology represented a meaningful advance in how large volumes of data can be handled at lower energy cost.

The announcement positions Aisin, primarily known as an automotive parts manufacturer, as a participant in the intensifying competition to produce more energy-efficient semiconductors capable of supporting artificial intelligence workloads.
