NGV Registration Ban Scheduled for July 2025, Announces Loke
Starting July 1, 2025, Malaysia will ban all natural gas vehicles (NGVs) from registration and use on its roads.
Cabinet’s Decision on Safety Concerns
KUALA LUMPUR: Starting July 1, 2025, Malaysia will prohibit the registration and use of all natural gas vehicles (NGVs), announced Transport Minister Anthony Loke. This decision, made by the Cabinet on October 2, addresses safety concerns for NGV drivers and other road users.
Additionally, PETRONAS will phase out NGV fuel sales beginning immediately, aiming to conclude by July 1, 2025.
Transition Support for Affected Vehicle Owners
Loke stated that eligible NGV vehicle owners will receive assistance to switch to petrol vehicles, with RM3,000 vouchers available for qualifying individuals, disbursed within 30 days. Applications for NGV taxis and fully NGV-powered vehicles close on December 31, while applications for dual-fuel vehicles extend until April 30, 2025.
Currently, there are 9,509 NGV taxis, 32,137 registered private NGVs, 2,150 natural-gas buses and trucks, and 587 NGVs used for machinery.
