NEW YORK: The NBA announced on September 30 that the legendary Dikembe Mutombo, a Hall of Famer, has passed away at the age of 58 due to brain cancer.

Mutombo, standing an impressive seven feet two inches tall, was a well-loved figure in basketball, known for his remarkable shot-blocking abilities and tenacious defense. Over his illustrious career, he earned eight NBA All-Star selections and was honored with the defensive player of the year title four times.

“Dikembe Mutombo was a giant, both on and off the court. He was celebrated as one of the most formidable shot-blockers in NBA history and dedicated his life to uplifting others outside the game,” stated NBA Commissioner Adam Silver in an official statement.

His vibrant personality and iconic finger-wagging celebration endeared him to fans during his 18 seasons with six different teams, where he averaged 9.8 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. He reached the NBA Finals twice in his career.

Following his retirement in 2009, Mutombo took on the role of the NBA’s first global ambassador, playing a vital part in promoting the sport throughout Africa.

“He was passionate about the positive changes that basketball could bring to communities, particularly in his home country, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and across Africa,” added Silver.
