Sarawak will restrict goods vehicles during Hari Raya to reduce congestion and enhance road safety measures.

Government’s Initiative to Control Traffic Congestion

KUCHING: Sarawak will temporarily restrict the movement of goods vehicles during Hari Raya as part of efforts to improve road safety and manage traffic congestion.

State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin stated that the enforcement dates would be announced soon, in coordination with the Road Transport Department (JPJ).

“We have been working closely with JPJ, and the official notice will be released soon. Such restrictions are common during festive seasons, including Chinese New Year, to ensure a safer journey for all,” he explained at a road safety campaign launch on Wednesday (March 12).

Safety Measures to Prevent Road Accidents

On Monday (March 10), federal Transport Minister Anthony Loke announced that a nationwide ban on goods vehicles would be imposed on March 29-30 and April 5-6, coinciding with the Hari Raya peak travel period.

Loke stressed that restricting heavy vehicles from the roads during this time would help reduce congestion and lower the risk of accidents.

“Many families will be traveling long distances to celebrate Hari Raya, and we want to ensure their journey is as safe and smooth as possible. Reducing the number of goods vehicles on the roads is a proactive step toward achieving this goal,” he stated.

Previous restrictions during festive seasons have been effective in maintaining traffic flow and minimizing road hazards, prompting the continuation of this initiative.

Enhancing Public Awareness Through Safety Campaigns

In addition to road restrictions, Lee announced that a state-wide road safety campaign would be launched on March 17 in Mukah, focusing on educating road users about responsible driving.

“We are introducing green Raya packets as part of our campaign. Similar to the red packets we distributed during Chinese New Year, these will highlight important safety messages to remind drivers to be extra cautious on the road,” he said.

The green packets will showcase vibrant illustrations of Sarawak’s transportation network, including roads, rivers, and AirBorneo, with key safety reminders about wearing seat belts, using helmets, and adhering to speed limits.

“Our goal is for everyone to reach their destination safely and enjoy the festive season without worry. Please drive responsibly,” Lee added.
