Loke: Ministry to Study Senior Licence Proposal
Loke announces that the ministry will study the proposal for senior citizens’ driving licence renewal evaluations.
Senior Citizens’ Licence Renewal Proposal Under Review
SEPANG: The Ministry of Transport is considering a proposal that would require senior citizens aged 65 and above to undergo both health and competency assessments before renewing their Malaysian driving licences.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke stated that while the ministry is open to the proposal, a detailed review will be necessary before making any decisions.
“We will study the proposal report carefully. We will not rush to introduce any new conditions,” Loke explained in a press conference after presiding over the National Logistics Task Force meeting on Monday (Nov 25).
Concerns Over Elderly Drivers’ Safety and Road Accidents
Loke responded to questions about the possibility of requiring senior citizens to pass health and competency tests before renewing their licences.
Earlier, reports indicated that the increasing number of accidents involving elderly drivers may be reduced if additional conditions were introduced for licence renewals for this age group.
One of the suggestions is to mandate health and competency assessments for senior citizens aged 65 and above. This would be a significant change, as there is currently no upper age limit for driving in Malaysia.
Logistics Hub Development in Negeri Sembilan and Investments
In other news, Loke confirmed that Negeri Sembilan would be the location for Malaysia’s new logistics hub, with Nilai being considered for the development site.
“The state government of Negeri Sembilan has expressed its full support, and we are now in the process of selecting appropriate land for the project,” Loke said.
He also mentioned that the Malaysian Investment Development Authority has briefed the task force on new incentives to attract investment for the Smart Logistics Complex, including tax breaks of up to 70%, as part of Budget 2025. – Bernama
