ISKANDAR PUTERI: A two-hour break on Fridays will soon become a reality for Johor workers, as announced by Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi. This policy will take effect on January 1, 2025.
Weekend Changes to Accommodate Prayers
This initiative follows Johor’s decision to transition its weekend from Friday-Saturday to Saturday-Sunday. The policy aims to allow Muslim employees adequate time for Friday prayers.
Implementation for All Sectors
“Both public and private sector employees will benefit from this. Employers in the private sector must extend Friday break times to two hours,” said Onn Hafiz. Public sector schedules will align with federal government timings.
Schools Play a Supporting Role
Schools are encouraged to provide prayer spaces for male Muslim students. Surau and hall facilities will be utilized, with coordination from the Education Department and Islamic Religious Department.

Onn Hafiz highlighted the economic benefits of the weekend shift, stating that it would also enhance family life while upholding the sanctity of religion.
End of the Current Weekend Setup
This policy marks the end of Johor’s Friday-Saturday weekend practice, a tradition since 2014, as decreed by Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim in October.
