Foreign National Targeted by Scammers
JOHOR BARU: A New Zealand citizen, aged 61, lost RM216,000 in an online investment scam. The victim filed a police report on Nov 28, detailing how he was contacted on Oct 2 by a man posing as “Michael Wong.”
Bogus Investment Platform Promoted
The scammer introduced https://m.worldcoinkk.com , a website claiming monthly returns of 3%-5%. Between Oct 3 and Oct 25, the victim made 27 online transfers to SPB International Sdn. Bhd.’s bank account.
Savings Wiped Out in Fraudulent Scheme
Wong later demanded additional payments, but the victim refused. When he received no returns, he realized he had been scammed, losing his life savings in the process.
Case Filed Under Cheating Laws
The authorities are treating the case as cheating under Section 420 of the Penal Code. Legal action may include imprisonment, caning, and fines. Investigations are also exploring the role of “money mules” in the scam.
Public Advised to Remain Cautious
ACP Balveer Singh emphasized the importance of vigilance against online scams. He encouraged the public to use resources like Semak Mule and the NSRC’s hotline to verify the legitimacy of investments.
