Foreign tourist scammed and threatened with a knife at Malaysia’s Perhentian Island, sparking calls for transparent pricing policies.

A foreign woman reported on TikTok that she was scammed and threatened while snorkeling at Malaysia’s Perhentian Island.

In the video, she recounted her unpleasant experience visiting the island for the first time with her sister. While dining at a local restaurant, a female staff member recommended a snorkeling trip using her brother’s boat service, offering them a discounted rate of RM30 per person. However, after the snorkeling activity, the woman’s brother demanded a higher payment. During the argument, the staff member claimed they had only paid RM30 and needed to add RM70. Eventually, they agreed to pay an additional RM30.

The situation escalated when a friend of the staff member suddenly appeared, brandishing a knife and chasing them, which frightened the sisters. The woman urged Perhentian Island staff to provide clear pricing to prevent similar misunderstandings and ensure tourist safety.
