PETALING JAYA: Diver Nurqayyum Nazmi Mohd Nazim has restored Malaysia’s pride at the World Junior Diving Championships by ending an 18-year medal drought.
Earning Bronze on the Global Stage
The 18-year-old secured bronze in the boy’s 3m springboard final (16-18 years) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, with a score of 506.75 points. The event was won by China’s Yan Xin, who scored 546.60 points, while Norway’s Isak Borslien claimed silver with 508.35 points.
Yong Rui Jie’s Efforts Recognized
Fellow Malaysian Yong Rui Jie finished 10th in the competition, recording a score of 440.30 points.
Strong Performances in Preliminaries
Nurqayyum’s journey to the podium was highlighted by his second-place finish in the preliminaries, where he scored 479.30 points, just behind Yan Xin’s 524.85.
Reviving Malaysia’s Diving Legacy
Malaysia’s last diving medal at this level was won by Bryan Nickson Lomas, who took bronze in the boy’s 10m platform in 2006. Bryan also made history with a gold medal in the 3m springboard at the 2004 edition.
