Police Investigate Era FM DJs Over Alleged Mockery of Religious Ritual

KUALA LUMPUR: The police have launched an investigation into a viral video involving Era FM DJs , which has been accused of mocking a religious ritual.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain confirmed that six police reports have been lodged regarding the controversial video.

Video Removed After Thousands of Views

“Our investigation has found that the video has since been taken down. Before its removal, it was viewed 95,400 times and shared by 204 users,” he stated on Tuesday (March 4).

Legal Implications of the Case

The case is being investigated under Section 298 of the Penal Code and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act (CMA).

A conviction under Section 298 could lead to a maximum sentence of one year in jail, a fine, or both. Meanwhile, under Section 233 of the CMA, the penalties include a fine of up to RM50,000, a maximum imprisonment of one year, or both, with an additional RM1,000 fine for each day the offense continues after conviction.

Complaint Filed by a Concerned Citizen

“One of the reports was made by a 44-year-old engineer who came across the video on Facebook and alleged that several individuals from the radio station were making fun of Hindu religious traditions,” Razarudin explained.

Era FM DJs Issue Public Apology

Following the backlash, the DJs involved have released an official apology via the Era FM Facebook page, addressing concerns raised by the public and affected communities.
